With a perfectly good, solid material world under their feet, humans are constantly trying to jump off of it and live somewhere else. It’s usually some conceptual version of heaven (i.e.: field of flowers, 72 virgins, the 1950s, infinite smoke shop, etc.).
As attached as they are to these insubstantial concepts, they dump them when things get serious. If they’re shackled to a railroad track with a train coming, the vast majority will choose a hacksaw over self-help DVDs, prayer beads or some holy book.
