Criminals are a superstitious cowardly lot.

This is a view from a time the there was little nuance in the examination of the roots of criminality. It would not have been unusual to hold the view that some people are just ‘born bad’.

Fortunately (and hopefully), society has evolved and able to examine layers and factors that lead to criminal behavior. In the absence of economic opportunity, education and social mobility, humans will continue to walk backwards into the 21st century.
